Why Emilia Cross Works Analog (And Why It Keeps Saving Her)
I get asked about Emilia Cross's notebook a lot.
Why analog? Why paper files and mechanical pencils and handwritten logs in a world that runs on algorithms and encrypted signals? She's a cybersecurity analyst. Shouldn't she trust the tools of her trade?
The honest answer: Emilia doesn't trust systems because she understands them too well. She's spent her career studying how digital infrastructure fails, how data gets corrupted, how systems designed to protect people get repurposed to hide things. She knows that the most dangerous lie is the one that looks like a clean dataset.
So she works around the edges. The notebook isn't a quirk. It's a survival strategy. A handwritten log can't be remotely wiped. A physical file can't be corrupted by a signal you didn't send. A mechanical pencil doesn't need a network connection to function.
In The Eleven Minute Void, that approach mattered. An eleven-minute communications blackout was erased from every digital record. Every system said it never happened. Emilia noticed because she wasn't relying on those systems. She was cross-referencing physical timestamps, handwritten notes, things that existed outside the network.
In The Silent Servers, it mattered again. Corrupted financial signals, a dead brother's name hidden in data that was designed to stay buried. The systems didn't flag it. The algorithms didn't catch it. Emilia did, because she was reading between the lines of the infrastructure, not trusting the surface.
Three books in, the pattern is clear. Every time the conspiracy evolves, every time it adapts to whatever Emilia uncovered in the last book, her analog instincts are the thing that catches what the machines miss. Not because machines are bad. Because whoever is behind this conspiracy understands machines. They build systems. They control data. They can rewrite digital records.
They can't rewrite Emilia's notebook.
The Vanishing Algorithm arrives October 15. I can't tell you what Emilia finds this time. But I can tell you her notebook is still in her hand. And that still matters.
If you haven't met Emilia yet, The Eleven Minute Void (Book 1) is free on Kindle Unlimited. The Silent Servers (Book 2) is out now. One week is all you need to catch up.

The machines keep evolving. Emilia keeps writing things down. So far, she's the one still standing.
